“I Don’t Think It’s Just Our Goal, I Think All of Humanity Has a Stake in This” – Romanian Survivors of Buchenwald Concentration Camp (fragments)

by Gazeta de Artă Politică 18 April 2015
written by Gazeta de Artă Politică

By Ioana Florea, Isabela Panek, Jelena Steigerwald Between 1937 and 1945, more than 250.000 people from all over Europe, including Northern Transylvania, were imprisoned by the Nazi regime in Buchenwald concentration camp and its adjacent camps. Testimonies from this period were given by survivors in interviews taken in 1998, 2002, 2005 and during a discussion between Miklós/Nicolae Kallós, Ladislau/Vasile Nuszbaum, László Székely, the activists from “Third Generation Buchenwald” and researchers from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, which took place in Cluj in October 2014. We thank Andrea Julika Ghiță for facilitating this discussion. Most of the Romanian prisoners from Buchenwald …

Prison Days (fragments)

by Gazeta de Artă Politică 4 April 2015
written by Gazeta de Artă Politică

by Zaharia Stancu Zaharia Stancu was one of the most radical left-wing opponents of the fascist dictatorship in Romania. Ever since he became a journalist, in 1934, he militated against the political terror the country would experience in the 1940s. He was arrested and interned in Târgu-Jiu internment camp during the winter of 1942-1943: “I became prisoner nr. 3912, who was ‘responsible for spreading alarming news with the criminal intent to undermine citizens’ morale.’” His book, Prison Days [Zile de lagăr] was published for the first time in 1945. Prison Days documents the time spent in the camp, the oppressive …

”It was dark outside, day and night. This was Transnistria, the place where we went through living hell.“ The Deportation of Roma to Transnistria

by Gazeta de Artă Politică 20 March 2015
written by Gazeta de Artă Politică

By: Isabel Panek, Jelena Steigerwald   In the last years, the Romanian authorities have officially recognise Roma as victims of the Holocaust. But still their suffering and loss is not firmly fixed in the memory culture. Different projects and initiatives exist to support Roma survivors to receive compensation and to give their story a voice, such as the film “Valley of Sighs” or the project “Helping Roma Survivors of Deportations to Transnistria”.   On the 22nd of June 1941 Nazi-Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the war of destruction started. During the operation, which was called operation Barbarossa, more than four …

Speak Softly and Carry A Big Stick – The Anti-Semitic Student Movement of Interwar Romania (fragments)

by Gazeta de Artă Politică 14 March 2015
written by Gazeta de Artă Politică

By Elisabeth Weber The interwar period, often dubbed “The Golden Age of Romanian Culture”, was also the age of student violence and disorder. Several student strikes and many violent conflicts between “Christian” students and Jews left their mark on the everyday academic life of those times. Anti-Semitic aggressions led to interventions from the authorities and university shut-downs lasting several months. If classes were not suspended, they were held in the presence of the military, which was requested to keep the campuses safe. The protests were legitimate, since the students were faced with overcrowded campuses and lacked the conditions to study. …
